1. Breaking in new battery : A new mobile phone battery comes in fully or partially discharged condition,it should be fully charged before first-time use.You may feel great temptation to use your new mobile phone before getting your cell phone battery fully charged, you should avoid doing this.If you want your new mobile phone battery to operate at its full capacity then should strictly follow this precaution. As far as the question "how many hours a new cell phone battery should be charged for the for the first-time" is concerned depends upon the type of battery your mobile phone is shipped with.
Nickel-based mobile phone batteries are recommended to be charged for at least 16 hours for  first-time charging, and should undergo 2-4 full charge and discharge cycles. While Lithium Ion (Li-ion) batteries, that new mobile phones are shipped with, should be charged for 5-6 hours.
Unlike Nickel-based batteries,Li-ion batteries do not suffer from so-called "memory effect",so Li-ion batteries should not be discharged fully before recharging, rather the overall working life of a Li-ion battery declines every time it is fully discharged. It is recommended to recharge a Li-ion battery before getting it fully discharged. It is a good practice to recharge the Li-ion battery when the battery meter of your mobile phone shows that only one bar of battery charge indicator is left.
2. Avoid battery Exposure to Heat: Frequently exposing your battery to heat may adversely shorten the overall working life of your mobile phone battery.Your battery is more likely to last longer if it is normally operated near room temperature.Extreme weather conditions are simply beyond your control however, you can avoid frequent and prolonged exposure of your mobile phone and mobile phone battery to high temperature by avoiding to leave your mobile phone in direct sun light and in a car whose internal temperature is high due to extended exposure to sun light.
3. Charger Type: It is always better to use cell phone manufacturer recommended charger for charging your cell phone battery.Check your mobile phone battery while it is being charged,if it gets excessively hot while being charged then there is definitely something wrong with your charger. You charger is either not working properly or it is not compliant with the specifications recommended by the mobile phone manufacturer. However,it is absolutely normal for the mobile phone battery to get a little warm while being charged.
4. Avoid Overcharging Battery: Frequently overcharging your mobile battery or leaving your mobile connected with charger all night may be quite damaging for your cell phone battery. This may adversely shorten the life of cell phone battery, also due to frequent overcharging your cell phone battery may swell up and may deform. So it recommended to disconnect your mobile phone from the charger after your mobile phone battery has been fully charged.
5. Avoid Short-circuiting battery Terminals: Avoid getting your mobile phone battery short-circuited.A battery may be short-circuited whenever a coin, clip or safety pin happens to develop a direct connection between the positive and negative terminals of battery. This may happen when you are carrying your spare mobile phone battery in your purse or packet. This may be very damaging for your mobile phone battery.
6. Store battery Properly: If your mobile battery will not be in use for a month or longer then it should not be left installed in your mobile phone. It is recommended that you should remove your battery from your mobile phone and place it in a cool, dry and clean place.Prolonged exposure to moisture, heat and dirt may damage your mobile phone battery.
7. Keep Contacts of battery Clean: You should keep the contacts of mobile phone battery clean.Do not let dirt deposit on your mobile phone battery contacts otherwise this may affect the performance of your battery by reducing the rate of energy transfer between battery and mobile. You may clean the battery contacts by rubbing them with a cotton swab or by applying isopropyl alcohol.

I hope these tips may prove helpful to you to prolong over all working life of your mobile phone battery.
