Mobile Phone Charger that Runs on Water

A Swedish company has invented a mobile phone charger that runs on water. This charger has been named  PowerTrekk. This charger is good for those people who spend their time away from electricity grid in remote areas like desert or rural areas where there is no electricity. It  has been developed to charge mobile phones, cameras,GPS and other such rechargeable portable devices.

The PowerTrekk charger uses Sodium Silicide as its main source of power, which reacts with water to generate electrical power for charging a device. The sodium silicide is stored in a small round container called a PowerPukk. According to dailymail,"Sodium silicide is a new chemical powder that has been developed by 'green' energy company SiGNa Chemistry, based in New York. PowerTrekk is the first commercial product that has used sodium silicide."

It features a USB port for charging the the device. It provides instant power to any electronic equipment that can be charged via USB port. With just one tablespoon of water it can generate electrical energy enough for 10 hours of mobile phone battery life.
PowerTrekk charger uses fuel cell technology which cleanly converts Hydrogen into electricity in a very efficient way.Unlike solar chargers, the fuel cell power is generated quickly and reliably as you do not have to wait for the clear sky and daytime for bright sunlight.

The technical features of this charger are :
  • USB-compliant output
  • Output voltage: 5V
  • Output power: 5 W from battery,
  • 2.5 W from battery and fuel cell
  • PowerTrekk Puck
  • Energy in cartridge: 4 Wh (nominal)
  • Internal buffer: 1500 mAh, 3.7 V, 5.6 Wh
Physical dimensions of charger are :
  • LxBxH: 127x66.5x45 mm^3
  • Weight: 244 g
Physical dimensions of  PowerPukk  are:
  • PowerTrekk Puck
  • Height: 20 mm
  • Diam: 50.8 mm (2 inch)
  • Weight: 33 g (nominal)
"PowerTrekk has a competitive edge over traditional portable chargers," said Björn Westerholm of myFC, the company which developed the charger.
"Fuel cell power is generated immediately and charging is not impacted by weather or the position of the sun, as for solar panels. Compared to battery powered travel chargers, PowerTrekk offers reliable charging as the fuel packs do not deplete as batteries do," he added. The product was first unveiled last year at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, but a modified version of this product has been on displayed at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.Further details about this charger may be found at the official website of the Powertrekk.
