Serafina - The World's Smallest Autonomous Submarine

Deep sea explorations have always been a great challenge to engineers and geo-physicists,both in terms of technology and financial resources required for such explorations. In such explorations, an under water vehicle or submarine (manned or autonomous) is a very important instrument that has a vital role in exploring the vast depths of the oceans. In this regard development of Serafina, the world's smallest autonomous submarine, developed at The Australian National University (ANU) is a great breakthrough.Development of this small and autonomous underwater vehicle is indeed the beginning of a new era of oceanic discovery as this submarine has potential applications in shipwreck recovery, mineral explorations, search and rescue missions.

What is Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)?

An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is an Electrical device or equipment which serves as an emergency or backup power source when the input power supply, usually the utility mains, fails. In addition to serving as a backup power source, -the UPS also serves a “power conditioner” by ensuring that the electricity being supplied to sensitive instruments and devices in your home or office like computer, TV and telecommunication equipment is free from common utility power problems like voltage sag, surge, noise, frequency instability and spikes.
A UPS, unlike an emergency power system or standby generator, provides almost instantaneous protection from interruptions in power supplied to the electrical load or device from utility mains. For low power electrical devices or loads the UPS provides this protection through one or more attached batteries and electronic circuitry. While for high power electrical loads this protection is provided by the UPS by means of diesel generators and flywheels.
Broadly speaking there are three common types of UPS: On-line UPS, Line Interactive UPS and Standby UPS. However, many manufacturers categorize UPS according to the design approaches used to implement UPS Systems. According to the design approaches used to implement UPS Systems, as described by  Schneider Electric, the following are the main types of UPS:
  • Standby
  • Line Interactive
  • Standby-Ferro
  • Double Conversion On-line
  • Delta Conversion On-line

sQuba - World's First Submarine Car,reality or fiction?

Three decades ago,in 1977,the James Bond impressed the world by driving a car that could 'fly' under water in the film titled "The Spy Who Loved Me".This role was then played by Roger Moore. This act of James Bond in that movie was merely an animation effect, not the reality. At that time it was not possible to drive any car under water,as there was no real submarine car at that time. But now submarine car is a reality.
This scene of James Bond's movie greatly inspired Frank M Rinderknecht, the founder and CEO of Swiss auto-maker company Rinspeed, to turn this idea into reality. He turned his dream into reality by developing world's first submarine car sQuba.sQuba is actually the world's first car that can be driven both on the road and under water. This car can actually 'fly' under water .Snapshots of this car are shown below:
