How to extend life of your Car's Tyres?

Car tyres are expensive and thus require big amount of money to replace.Having your car tyres in proper shape are vital for your car's performance and for safe driving. If your car tyres are worn out or if you drive your car with its tyres under-inflated,it may not only result in a flat tyre or a dangerous blowout leading to severe accident if you are driving on highway at high speed. With proper care and adopting some precautionary measures you can easily prolong the life of your car's tyres.

Here are some useful tips that may improve over all working life of your tyres:
  1. Maintain Appropriate pressure in Tyres : The air pressure in your car's tyres plays an important role in determining how long your car's tyres will last and how smoothly your car may be driven on the road.It is recommended by tyre manufactures to maintain an appropriate air pressure in your car's tyres. You should check the air pressure in your car's tyres, including the spare tyre,on regular basis at least once a month. It is better to check air pressures in your car's tyres on weekly basis. The recommended standard tyre pressure for your car's tyres may be found in your car's user manual or it is stamped on the side of the tyre.Online sources claim that 32 Pounds Per Square Inch (PSI) is the air pressure good enough for a car's tyres. One thing important to note in this regard is that car's tyres pressure should be checked only when the car's tyres are cool not after long drive when the car's tyres get hot.Otherwise you will not be able to get accurate reading of your car's tyres pressure. You should buy your own gauge to check the pressure of your car's tyres because the gauges that are used at your local service stations for checking air pressure in the tyre are usually not accurate to rely on them blindly.Overinflation or putting too much air in tyre is as bad as underinflation is,as putting too much air in tyre not only causes the tread in the centre of the tyre wear more than the tread on the outside edge of the tyre but also it results in increased operating temperature of the tyre that may lead to dangerous blowout. So keep your car's tyres properly inflated according to the instructions of tyre manufacturer or according to the recommendations of your car's user manual.
  2. Keep your Car's Wheels Aligned and Balanced with good Shock Absorbers : Out of balance tyres, misaligned suspension, bad shock absorbers or struts are some of the reasons behind uneven  tyre wear such as cupping and feathering.such uneven tyre wear may be avoided by keeping your car's tyres properly balanced  with properly aligned suspension, shock absorbers and struts in good working condition.
  3. Regularly Inspect your Car's Tyres for Punctures and other damages :You should inspect your tyres regularly for uneven wear, puncture, cuts or cracks etc.You should also check the tread depth of your car's tyres. If the tread depth of the tyre is not adequate then you should get the tyre replaced,as a worn out tyres with inadequate tread depth are not safe for driving especially in rain.
  4. Keep your Car's Tyres Properly Inflated :Make sure to keep your car's tyres properly inflated to protect them from unusual wear and dangerous blowout.Under inflated tyres get hotter than a properly inflated tyre and may get excessively hot resulting in tyre failure, which may lead to serious accident .An underinflated tyre also wears abnormally, the tread on the outside edge of an underinflated tyre wears faster than the tread in the center of the tyre.If you drive your car with underinflated  tyres,it also reduces fuel efficiency of your car as your car needs more fuel to overcome the rolling resistance of the underinflated tyres.
  5. Drive Smoothly: Driving your car roughly like rapidly accelerating your car, braking hard suddenly and cornering your car too quickly put a lot of strain on your car's tyres thus leading to reduction in life of your car's tyres.
  6. Avoid Road Hazards: While driving you should be careful of road hazards like tyre puncturing debris such as wood, glass, sharp stones and nails that could puncture or severely damage your tyres. You should also avoid hitting the potholes particularly at high speed that could bruise your tyres and ultimately reduce the life of your car's tyres.
  7. Drive Slowly : To prolong the life of your car's tyres you should drive slowly,as driving your car at high speed makes car's tyres get hot, also driving your car fast puts much more strain on your car's tyres than driving at slow speed, which makes your car's tyres wear fast.So if you want to prolong the life of your car's tyres you should avoid unnecessarily driving your car at high speed.
  8. Rotate your Car's Tyres regularly: Front tyres of the car wear out more quickly than the rear tyres because of the extra strain on the front tyres caused by steering.Rotating your car's tyres regularly to even out the tyres wear helps to prolong the life, performance and mileage of your car's tyres.GT Radial Tyre Manufacturer claims that the rotation of your car's tyres is required when the mileage reaches between 8000-10000Km.
