World's Fastest Solar Car - New World Record Set

Earlier this year on 7th of January 2011,at 10:32 am,a solar-powered electric car,Sunswift IVy Solar Car,developed by a group of students from University of South Wales, smashed the world record of top speed solar powered car. This record breaking event took place at HMAS Albatros navy base air strip in Nowra, Australia. With a speed of 88.738Km/h,the Sunswift IVy outperformed the previous record holder by a speed of about 10Km/h and claimed the Guiness World Record for the fastest solar powered car.The previous record holder of the world's fastest solar powered car has a top speed of about 78Km/h.The previous record of the world's fastest car was set by GM Sunraycer in 1987.The snapshots of this record-breaking event are shown below:

This record breaking drive of Sunswift IVy was performed by professional racing drivers Barton Mawer and Craig Davis from Electric Car company Tesla's European Operations. After the record braking drive of Sunswift IVy,Barton Mawer declared that they were confident and all they needed was a little sunshine which was enough at the time of this record-breaking event.

The Adjudicators from Guiness World Book of Records were present on the spot to witness the record-breaking run. After witnessing this record-breaking run of Sunswift IVy,they not only officially recognized the new record but also they handed over the certificate of recognition to the   team involved in development of Sunswift IVy.
The Sunswift IVy was powered by silicon solar cells only as battery was removed for record-breaking attempt. It weighs only 1/10th of the weight of an average car.It is equipped with 98% efficient brushless CSIRO three-phase DC motor, which needs only 1300 watts of solar generated power to hit the average estimated speed of 85Km/h,which is equivalent to the power required by a toaster to toast two slices of bread. It is a three-wheeled car with monocoque carbon fibre body.
The students invested 18 months in developing Sunswift IVy and they were successful in designing a record-breaking working model. After the successful record-breaking run,Daniel Friedman, the Sunswift Project Manager, expressed great optimism about the future of renewable energy technology,as according to him this success in their record-breaking project would spur a lot more interest in solar energy and debate about renewable energy technology.
