ASIMO - Japan's Autonomous Humanoid Walking Robot

On November 8,2011,Honda Motor Co., Ltd.,Japan, unveiled its all-new ASIMO humanoid robot, that is equipped with world's first autonomous behaviour control technology.Due to significantly advanced intelligence and physical ability, this robot is capable of moving without being controlled by the human operator. With its decision making capability this robot is intelligent enough to determine its behaviour in concert with its surroundings such as movements of people. This robot is equipped with many advanced capabilities like high-level postural balancing capability, external recognition capability and capability to generate autonomous behaviour which render it capable of  autonomously walk and move around like a human being.

Due to its advanced intelligence,ASIMO comprehensively evaluates the inputs from multiple sensors, that are equivalent to auditory, visual and tactile senses of a human being, and then based upon these inputs it estimates the situation of the surrounding environment and determines its behaviour accordingly. That's why ASIMO is capable of responding to the movement of people and surrounding situations. The coordination between auditory and visual sensors enables ASIMO to not only simultaneously recognize a face and voice, but also recognize the voices of multiple people speaking at the same time.Based upon the information from pre-set space sensors,AISIMO is capable of predicting the direction a person will walk within a next few seconds. If the the estimated locations of the person and AISIMO intersect,it will take an alternate path to avoid collision.

Key specifications of all-new ASIMO are :
  • Height : 130cm
  • Weight : 48Kg
  • Operating Degrees of Freedom : Total 57 degrees of freedom
  • Running Speed : 9km/hr
Due to the combination of strengthened legs,an expanded range of leg movement and a newly developed control technology,ASIMO is capable of walking, running forward and backward, and hopping on one or two legs continuously. It can also walk over an uneven surface while maintaining a stable posture.Due to highly functional multi-fingered hand with tactile and force sensors combined with object recognition technology,ASIMO is capable of performing many tasks with dexterity like picking up a bottle and twisting off the cap or holding a soft paper cup and pouring the liquid without squishing it and much more.Further details about this robot may be found at the official website of Honda.
