Murata Boy is the world's first bicycle-riding robot developed and designed by Murata Manufacturing Company, Ltd.,Japan.This robot can ride a bicycle like a human being.Murata Manufacturing Company, Ltd.,is a Japan-based company involved with Research, Production and Sales of Electronic Devices made from fine ceramics.
It weighs approximately 5Kg and its height is about 50Cm.In case if it falls off the bicycle, it can get right back on the bicycle. This robot is equipped with four types of sensors : an ultrasonic sensor to detect obstacles and to avoid collisions,a shock sensor to detect uneven and bumpy surfaces, and two gyro sensors to detect inclination, angular velocity and to render it capable of making free-standing and super slow runs. This robot is interfaced with PC through a wireless LAN connection. This robot may be issued commands from the PC by the user to move it forward or backward and to stop it.In addition to the user commands the robot may also be operated to follow a pre-programmed path. While riding the bicycle this robot can reach the speed of 60cm/sec per second. It is capable of balancing itself in a complete stop position.
This robot is also equipped with a camera by which it can capture images and transmit them to the PC.According to murata, several general purpose components are used for electronic circuits including "chip monolithic ceramic capacitor" to properly supply electricity,"ceramic resonator (CERALOCK®)" to resonate a reference signal,"NTC Thermistor" to detect temperature,"Trimmer Potentiometer" to compensate for circuit characteristic variance,"EMI filer (EMIFIL®)" to suppress electromagnetic noise, etc.Further details about this robot may be found at the official website of murata.
