The HRP-4C is a female humanoid robot developed by Shuuji Kjita (Leader) and others of the Humanoid Research Group,the Intelligent Systems Research Institute (Director : Shigeoki Hiraj) of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST)(President : Hioyuki Yoshikawa),Japan.It is a Cybernetic Human having the shape and appearance of a human being.It can not only walk and move like a human being but also,using speech recognition and so forth,it can interact with humans.Humanoid robots are expected to be one of the final forms of next generation robots.Applications of humanoid robots to date have been limited to the platforms of research and development (R&D),hobbies and so forth.Developing an intelligent biped humanoid robot,that could move an behave like a human being, is indeed a big challenge for engineers and scientists to meet.
This robot was publically demonstrated on 16 March 2009.With joints and dimensions,it was designed to look like an average Japanese woman as it has a female face and shape of a human being.It can not only express a range of feelings but also it can smile like a human.Using vocal synthesizer vocaloid it can also sing.
It is 158Cm tall in standing position and weighs 43Kg (including the battery).Its walking motions and general movements were developed by motion-capturing those of humans,then those motions were mimicked by applying the walking control technology developed in Humanoid Robotics Project (HRP).That's why this robot walks very much like a human being.This robot is based on User Centered Robot Open Architecture utilizing fundamental Robotic Technologies (RTs) including real-time Linux,RT middleware,robot simulator openHRP3,speech recognition and bipedal walking technology which have been studied and developed at AIST.It has been designed to closely mimic the human movements with 3-degrees of freedom in the hip,3 in the neck and 8 in the face.The speech recognition component of RT middleware is installed in the computer in the head section of this robot.Due to this speech recognition component HRP-4C can not only recognize human speech but also it can respond in numerous ways.It utilizes the patented technolgies of Honda Motors Co.,Ltd.The developers of this robot say that it is expected to be useful in entertainment and fashion industry,for device evaluation for humans working as human simulators and mechanical products to assist human movements.Further details about this robot may be found at the official website of AIST.
